Designer Tidbits: Cosmo Cricket

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Julie Comstock of Cosmo Cricket to the Jolly Jabber. Cosmo Cricket’s latest fabric collection is Circa 1934 from Moda.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Circa 1934 collection?
A: I simply had the idea in mind of an old print shop. For the most part, I don't use inspiration boards, but I did make one for this blog post to show you all just what was floating around in my head. The really funny thing is that Eric (my husband and co-designer of Cosmo Cricket) seems to know exactly what I see in my mind. I can describe the vision to him and he gets it instantly and vice versa so we work very well together.

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A:  Old Jazz music especially Duke Ellington!

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite (can only pick one!)?
A: Cream numbers on red because of how graphic the design is. I really have to thank the designer of the Clarendon font for creating such beautiful numbers to play with!

Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A:

Q: What is your favorite part of working in the fabric industry?
A: Designing and working with fabulous people! I love everyone at Moda, but especially Lissa Alexander ever since she sent me a hilarious video clip that had me laughing so hard I nearly fell off my chair.

Q: Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A: Yep, but if I get in trouble for it, you all have to come defend me!

Q: What is your absolute favorite thing in your house?
A: If I don't count family members as things, then this has to be it. I've actually cheated again, including not only my piano, but the little bud vase with the bird on it. Both are favorites!

Q: Which project stands out in your memory as your all-time favorite?
A: It's not finished yet, but this chronicles my son's artwork from the first grade. He's 14 now, ahhhhhh!!!

Q: Where do you do your best thinking? Can we see a photo of your studio?
A: I do my best thinking in the shower or on my morning walks. Here's a pic of my unaltered, totally honest workspace.... 'cause I hate all those perfect workspace photos out there. Who actually lives like that?!

Q: What is your favorite snack food? Can we see a photo of your fridge or pantry?
A: Ummm, you can see a photo of my fridge because Eric cleans it every week. My pantry is another story!!! My favorite snack food is anything with an overabundance of calories, fat, sugar and hopefully a high percentage of chocolate. Our family purchases chocolate chocolate chips in the 2 pound bags.

Q: What is your one guilty pleasure in life?
A: Magazines! I love them and would subscribe to all different types from National Geographic and Science America to Prevention and Somerset... if I weren't so practical! Because I read tons of trivial articles, I have endless amounts of useless knowledge and statistics that I rattle off throughout the day. I have been compared to Cliff Clavin on more than one occasion.
