Coincidentally, I just made a Disappearing 4 Patch donation quilt in camo and blue and green batik for the family support group at Joint Base Lewis McChord near Tacoma, Washington. I have a great supply of camo pants at the Goodwill near the base and thought I could make something interesting out of them.

My husband and I met while serving in the Navy, his parents were both in the Navy during WW2, my father was career Navy and my grandfather served in the Navy. Currently, my nephew is on active duty. My brother did a stint in the Air Force but we don't talk about that. VBG

ReplyDeleteAnother Navy family here! My father served for 26 years before retiring. He went back to work for the Navy as a contractor for several years before he retired again. I have worked for the Navy for 20 years so far. I have a cousin that served a stint in the Navy as well. I appreciate all those who serve in all branches of the military and those that support them on the home front.

ReplyDeleteGreat idea! My son has served 21+ years in the Air Force and has been in Afghanistan as well as many other places around the world. We are very proud of him and also recognize the sacrifice his wife and children have made during this time. He is retiring from the A.F. at the end of this calendar year. We will be very happy not to have him in harm's way.

ReplyDeleteMy brother-in-law served in the Princess Patricia Light Infantry..then moved on to the Airborne; this was before it was disbanned a few years back..he has been to Cyprus among many other countries; usually as peacekeeper...

ReplyDeleteMy hubby's father served in the Army during WWII, fighting in Europe and many of the Islands. My hubby served in the Marine Corp for four years. He joined in 1967 when he was 17 and was in Vietnam the first 13 months of our marriage...literally, he left five hours after the ceremony!(What can I say, we were 18 and impulsive, LOL) That was 43 years ago. Last May, our 22 year old grandson, that we raised from the day he was born, proudly joined the Air Force for six years. He plans to make a career of it and we couldn't be more proud of him. I am of course very proud of both my hubby and my grandson, and all of our troops.

ReplyDeleteOh boy, the list of loved ones who've served is a long one! I myself was in the Air Force. My father's father was a Marine. My mother's father was in the army during the Korean War. My husband's grandfather was career Air Force. My aunt was in the coast guard. Another aunt, Army National Guard. My great uncle, career Marine - two of his sons, Marines; another two, the Navy. Of my two best friends from high school, one's in Army ROTC, the other's a Naval officer who graduated from the academy. Big support for the military in my family! Thanks for the chance to win. :)

I have been trying to come up with projects for all those old uniforms that come back from Afghanistan in bad condition for every day work (but not bad enough to just get rid of), and have only made a computer bag out of them. Many of my relatives were/are in the service: Navy, Army, and Air Force. One grandfather served in The Spanish American War and WWI; Uncles and cousins (male and female) in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf/Desert Storm/Desert Shield, etc.; and now cousins in the mid-east conflicts. Others served in non-wartime roles.

ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful book! I have a few of my Daughter's uniforms that she gave me to make quilts from.
Grandpa was a medic in the South Pacific In WW II. Dad was a paratrooper, but only served during peacetime. My niece finished her tour in the air force, she had joined 3 months prior to 9/11. Additionally, my neighbor is starting a multiple year deployment, with 3 girls under 5 at home with mommy! I don't think there are very many of us in America that remain untouched by this war in some way. God bless our nation.

ReplyDeleteMy dad served in the army and was stationed in Germany. He was granted an honorable discharge when I was born so that he could be with my mom and me. My family and I still has a soft spot to this day (21years later) for all of those people who are so heroic enough to stand up for and defend our country everyday in the military while leaving their special some-ones and families all back at home. ReplyDeleteThis is a book that has been long needed. I would have liked to make a quilt for my husband using some of each of his uniforms for his retirement. He retired as a MSgt. in the USAF after 22 years.
ReplyDeleteI have my Dad's uniform and some other gear: patches, bars, canvas bags, and some embroidered silks from his tour of Japan in 1950. These days, not so many people are connected to the military as they were in the past. However, I always feel the support and gratitude for service members. I believe that is something that transcends political affiliation, and is sincere and heartfelt across this nation.

ReplyDeleteI tried to enlist in the Air Force when I was graduating from college. It was during the Vietnam War and when I went to visit the recruiter's table on campus, my friends were horrified. I was a Sociology major and I hoped to work in the Family Services Division. After going through all of the screening, I was rejected due to refractive vision (poor depth perception). I was puzzled about it at the time since I had no interest in a flying career, but was told anyone in officer's training had to meet the same requirements as the pilots. I don't thing that is still the case.

ReplyDeleteRight after Desert Storm, back in the 90s, my husband enlisted in the Airforce. Additionally, my bother served in the 82nd Airborne during Desert Storm. This is how we first came in contact with one another.

At least half of my cousins have served or married someone who has served or is serving in the military, primarily Marines, Army. and Navy.

He just lost his 19 year old sister in an accident with a Drunk Driver last Sept. and now his mother is losing him to overseas and danger. Let us keep them all in our prayers, please.

Where to start. My best friend of 13 years who I consider my sister just got out of the Navy after one tour and her husband, a Marine, was deployed last week. Both her brothers,Marines, have been deployed twice now and were volunteers to go back the second time which made it that much harder on all of us. My uncle is in the Air Force and plans on retiring in a few years. My brother in law is in the Air Force as well as we just found out that he will be deploying in January. Finally I have a brother who is in the Air Force as well and will be leaving for his first deployment tomorrow afternoon. I thank God every day to keep them all safe. For those who serve I know I cannot ever find the proper words to thank them and their families for all that they have done and sacrificed.

ReplyDeleteIf I were to join, I'd join the Air Force..that's what my dad was during WWII. I have a SIL that was in Army national guard and was in Iraq. While there he experienced stomach problems and he thought it was all the stress. Once he got home , it was discovered he had colon cancer. He's doing well now after surgery. They have two beautiful boys and expecting another child early next year! :)

My Dad and Uncles all served in the Military during WWII. My Dad was in the Navy and my uncles were in the Marines and Army Air Corp. My husband just retired after 24 years in the Army and I served in the Army as well from 93-97. Proud and honored to have served my country.
ReplyDeleteMy paternal granfather served in WWII, unfortunately I don't know what division or anything like that. I wanted to join the airforce when I was younger and become an airforce technician, working on the planes.
ReplyDeleteMy Paternal Grandfather served in WW1, my 2 Maternal uncles served in the NZ Army - one in Vietnam -, my husband has served 37 years (and is still serving) in the NZ Army and I served 3 years for NZ Army.

ReplyDeleteJust when I openened up this post last night, my phone rang. It was our Marine son who just graduated from USMC boot camp in July. He's in Camp Pendleton right now. I asked him to save all of his fatigues he could no longer wear so I could make some of these great projects. Today's his 21st birthday and we're so proud of him and all of the servicemen and women who serve and protect this country and the freedoms we so often take for granted.

ReplyDeleteThis book is a great idea! I was wondering what to do with my husband's old Army uniforms. My husband just retired after 27 years and now our son is serving in Germany with the Army. He is soon to be deployed to Afghanistan.

In two weeks I will have a son-in-law who is joining the Air Force. Using uniforms for this purpose is such a great idea!.

ReplyDeleteA lot of my friends are in the U:S: army. I live quite near to Wiesbaden/Germany where the army airfield is, hence I know quite a few of those guys who have to be on foreign deployment, to leave their loved ones back in the U.S. and to wait ages until theiy can see their family and friends again.

ReplyDeleteMy husband was in the Navy, Army National Guard, and National Guard Reserves. I make appreciation quilts all year long for the wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan with the American Legion who sponsors us. I would love to have this book to make some really special quilts/gifts.

ReplyDeleteMe.....I've been in the Australian Navy for 16 years as an Aircraft Technician. I deployed to the Middle East in 2002. What a wonderful way to recycle materials that would normally be thrown away after use...... I Have been inspired !

ReplyDeleteWhile I am not serving in the military, my brother is 3rd generation Navy. My father was a career officer in the Navy and I grew up moving every 2 years from coast to coast. I loved every minute of it and miss that lifestyle dearly. My brother will be deployed for the 2nd Christmas in a row this year and my mother will miss her first Christmas with her family in 30 years as she is deployed in Afghanistan supporting Operation Enduring Freedom as a Department of Defense contractor. It is very hard for her to be gone as she has always been the one Stateside and my father has been away for holidays. I try to keep my brother and my mother updated daily with pictures of my daily life and the progression of the various craft projects I am creating. I also am part of an organization called Soldiers Angels which offers moral support to deployed soldiers through letters, care packages and various other "teams." Currently, I am a part of the Letter Writing Team, Adoption Team, Patriot Pillowcases Team (handmade pillowcases for patients in combat hospitals), Sewing Team (handmade support for deployed, veterans and wounded), and Scarves Team (handmade heat and sand protection. I also participated in a Mud Run and raised money for this organization. My mother has made special shadow boxes and other mementos out of my father's medals and military memorabilia and now that I am learning to quilt and this book is specific to the military and how special uniforms mean to people I am very excited and encouraged by it.
ReplyDeleteWELL....MY DAD WAS IN THE ARMY IN WWII, MY BROTHER WAS IN THE NAVY I THINK DURING THE KOREAN THINGY, & NOW MY SON IS AN OFFICER IN THE NATIONAL GUARD......I LOVE ANYTHING PATRIOTIC & MILITARY, SO THIS WOULD BE VERY SPECIAL FOR ME TO RECEIVE.

ReplyDeleteMy nephew is on his second tour in Afghanistan with the Army. I live in a small town and we have 2 units of the Army National Guard deployed to Afghanistan. This is their 2nd deployment. It brings the war very close to home when teachers, bankers, city workers, auto repairmen, plumbers, etc, are suddenly gone from the community and you realize they were part of the National Guard. We are having a Christmas package event Saturday, packaging and mailing essentials and some niceties to every guardsman on duty to ensure they get a package for Christmas.

ReplyDeleteMy dad was in the Navy during WWII and my nephew currently serves in the Army. He is a sergeant in EOD and will be leaving for Afghanistan in January for his 3rd tour - the first was in Iraq and he's already served in Afghanistan but there is a huge need for EOD so back he goes again.

My husband served in the Navy, attached to the Marines most of his 22 year career. He had four tours in Viet Nam and two tours in Afghanistan. My father and step father were both in the Navy during WWII. My son was in the Air Force,my brother served in the Army and had one tour in Viet Nam. Numerous uncles served with various branches during WWII as well.

We also live in Dover, Delaware and have lots of friends who are military. I've already had people asking if I could make items for their family/friends with uniforms, so some guidance/inspiration would be great!
ReplyDeleteI was in the Navy and so was my other half. Between the 2 of us we have 51 years service….. and lots of old uniforms. I have used some in bags and passport covers…. they are fire retardant too!!!!
