Designer Tidbits: Lauren & Jessi Jung

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Lauren & Jessi Jung to the Jolly Jabber. Lauren & Jessi’s latest fabric collection is Flora from Moda Fabrics.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Flora collection?
A: Our inspiration for Flora came from sort of an English Tea Party ambiance... with secret gardens and small aviaries. My mom is obsessed with plant drawings that show off their roots as well as anything involving birds... and then my sister has a weird passion for branches, so those details were a must in the new line. We really wanted Flora to have a more elegant/decorative feel, and I think that came across with the set that turned out.

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: Flora doesn’t so much have a sound track as much as it has a set of DVDs… the entire series of Arrested Development and two Seasons of Monk to be exact. Those were the shows constantly playing in the background as we finished the design process.

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite?
A: The turquoise damask print is probably our favorite, because it combines all of the details of our English Tea Party into one print. We’ve also hidden a lot of little details that aren’t readily obvious unless you take a minute to look around...little garden snails, spider webs, inch worms, small bunnies, etc.

Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A: So far, our favorite project is a country fair themed quilt called Celebration that my Mom just finished, but my sister is also itching to start projects making bags, pillows, and duvet covers out of it too!

Q: What is your favorite part of working in the fabric industry?
A: My mom and I both agree that we are so lucky to be working in this business because it allows us to do what we love. We all love quilting and crafting...and making things in general...and designing fabric fits in there quite nicely.

Q: Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A: Here is a small morsel of what is to come in our next line...

Q: What is your absolute favorite thing in your house?
A: Our adorable dog Rudy! He is always happy to see you, and although you'd never guess it, he is an amazing guard dog...unless it's garbage day.

Q: Which project stands out in your memory as your all-time favorite?
A: My mom has made more quilts than I can count and they are all beautiful, but we are really excited about some of the research and development my sister, Carrie, is doing into bags and bag patterns. Right now we are still in the research phase, so the pattern that these bags were made from is not a Jung original, but we hope to be coming out with our own very soon!

Q: Where do you do your best thinking? Can we see a photo of your studio?
A: Our best work is done in the living room of my mom’s house or mine with some sort of murder mystery TV show playing in the background.

Q: What is your favorite snack food?
A: A little bit of chocolate after dinner.

Q: What is your one guilty pleasure in life?
A: Going to the fabric store for hours and coming home with much more than I originally intended...and more than I intended to spend.
