Designer Tidbits: Amanda Murphy

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Amanda Murphy to the Jolly Jabber. Amanda’s latest fabric collection is Veranda from Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Veranda collection?
A: White table linens with hem-stitching. Tulips in crystal vases. The sparkle of green glass in the sun. An elegant tea served “Under the Veranda”. Completely in my imagination, of course. I don’t have the facility to put this together in real life – just in fabric!

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: Anything by Lisa Hannigan.

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite (can only pick one!)?
A: It changes daily, but today I’ll pick Blossoms and Berries. It is very versatile and works well with all the other fabrics. It also makes an excellent border print.

Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A: Well, it is hard to pick, but I do love Blossoms because I think the pattern fits the personality of the collection.  I also have a small project coming up this winter in Quilters Newsletter that I just love.

Q: What is your favorite part of working in the fabric industry?
A: Hands down it is seeing what all the creative people out there do with my fabric – or my patterns!

Q: What is your absolute favorite thing in your house?
A: Children don’t count as things, right? If they don’t, then I would have to say my graphics tablet!

Q: Which project stands out in your memory as your all-time favorite?
A: My daughter and I made the Under the Veranda sampler in just 5 days. That was a bonding experience, to say the least.

Q: Where do you do your best thinking? Can we see a photo of your studio?
A: There is a room above our garage that just last week was a TOTAL disaster. It is a combination guest room/overflow design space with old furniture and new fabric. It would be way too generous and not at all accurate to term it “eclectic”. My dad visited and now we have shelving. (Everything you see on these shelves was previously on the floor! Literally. You could barely walk. Thanks, dad!

Of course, guests still must launch themselves over piles of quilts to get into bed.

That being said, I do most of my work in the main part of our house in the same room that our kids do schoolwork. It is just too hard to be in separate spaces. (When our kids were little they wouldn’t eat spaghetti because they thought it was thread. Don’t judge.) So the front room of our house is frequently a mess, but it is very well-used. This is our reality.

Luckily, our son prefers to work on the floor, which helps…

Q: What is your favorite snack food?
A: Since it is summer we are enjoying berries of every type along with the hot humid Charlotte weather. Wish the two didn’t go hand in hand.

Q: What is your one guilty pleasure in life?
A: German chocolate cake! You can’t go wrong with coconut and chocolate!

Thanks so much to Amanda Murphy for stopping by the Jolly Jabber, but before she goes, how about a giveaway?! All you have to do is comment on Amanda Murphy's post and tell us what you love about one of her collections or patterns! Good luck!

Block of the Month: Aunt Grace Garden Party

We are excited to welcome Vicki Bellino to the Jolly Jabber for the first time ever! Her new Aunt Grace Garden Party Block of the Month begins shipping at the Fat Quarter Shop in mid-September so make sure to reserve your spot before we sell out of this wonderful Block of the Month.

Hello everyone! My name is Vicki Bellino and my pattern company is called Bloom Creek. Together with Marcus Fabrics, Judie Rothermel and I will be kicking off our brand new Aunt Grace's Garden Party Block of the Month program in just a few weeks.

Judie Rothermel and I have become good friends over the years and learned that we both have an aunt who has had a major influence on our lives – Judie’s Aunt Grace and my Aunt Janet. After introducing our first Aunt Grace BOM, Circle of Friends, at quilt market in May 2010, we immediately began collaborating on a new concept for the next one.

We discussed the color palette Judie had in mind which would be used in a variety of small to large-scale florals and flower prints. After learning that both of our aunts were not only avid quilters, but shared a love of gardening and belonged to their local gardening clubs, it was a natural choice that Garden Party would be the theme of the next BOM. We also agreed to “change up” the typical BOM concept by using a block each month to make a horizontal row.

With all of that information floating around in my head, and the color fabric cards pinned on the wall, I began to design Aunt Grace’s Garden Party. In addition to the beautiful prints in this fabric line, I have also incorporated several of the 1930’s solids that seem to go hand-in-hand with traditional 1930’s quilts. My design concept was to add my own spin on what might be considered “traditional” 1930’s quilt blocks. I had such a wonderful response to the English paper piecing technique used in Circle of Friends, that I knew I would include this technique in Garden Party. (Besides, and as many of you may know, I am an avid English paper piecer.)

This six-month BOM includes several different techniques with easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams. I hope you enjoy participating in this program as much as I did designing it!

Designer Tidbits: Mark Cesarik

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Mark Cesarik back to the Jolly Jabber. Mark’s second fabric collection with Free Spirit is Morning Tides.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Morning Tides collection?
A: The ocean, ocean life and the natural world. I wanted to create a line of fabrics with an organic color scheme and motifs, while at the same time still maintaining my design style that kind of highlights a more modern aesthetic.

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: Oh, definitely a little bit of Tito Puente, a little Zero 7 and I'd sprinkle in some M. Ward to fill out the soundtrack.

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite (can only pick one!)?
A: MC 11 Royal. Definitely my favorite SKU in the collection. The colors and the motifs really put the entire collection into perspective

Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A:  My wife Cara is making a "HUGS" quilt for quilt Market, we haven't had sample yardage of the fabric very long so we are just now starting the process of making some really great projects. More to come.

Q: What is your favorite part of working in the fabric industry?
A: Being able to see the end result to my creative process is one thing, just the idea that my ideas and sketches will be manufactured and shipped off for others to see and use. Also, the people I have met, such an eclectic group of people that are involved in the industry.

Q: Can you give us a sneak-peak of your next fabric collection?
A: Yes, it's called Cosmic Burst and will be released in the 4th quarter of this year, 24 SKU's. I love this collection and I hope you all will as well.

Q: What is your absolute favorite thing in your house?
A: I would say this painting in our living room, I really love it, it's called October Smoke Jumpers and was painted in 2009.

Q: Which project stands out in your memory as your all-time favorite?
A: My wife and I are starting to dive into the embroidery creation thing, and this embroidery I designed and she created is incredible. Look out for our embroidery collections at Quilt Market in October.

Q: Where do you do your best thinking? Can we see a photo of your studio?
A: Well I wouldn't call this a "studio" so much as just a "corner of my living room". We live in New York City and don't have a ton of space. But my work area is clean and nice and works for me.

Q: What is your favorite snack food? Can we see a photo of your fridge or pantry?
A: Anything that falls into the category of a "snack" is tied for my top favorite.

Q: What is your one guilty pleasure in life?
A: HBO Sunday night programming, definitely.

3 for Me: Jocelyn Lai

Good morning everyone! We are very excited to welcome Jocelyn Lai back to The Fat Quarter Shop and back to the Jolly Jabber! This is her first 3 for Me selection and it promises to be a good one:

"It’s really good to be back on the Jolly Jabber! My picks for my first 3 for Me are very different but equally compelling to me. I love the combination of pink and plum in the Hyperreal Garden floral print with its lovely sketchy quality. In the Secret Garden print, I love how Sandi has tucked away little keyhole details in her gorgeous damask. The Storyboek choice appeals to my sense of whimsy and childhood fascination with fairytales – my favorite Christmas gift ever was a leather-bound set of Grimm’s fairytales, and I spent countless hours writing and illustrating my own little stories."

Jocelyn's 3:

1. Hyperreal Garden Plum Lush Foliage SKU# HG-8401

2. Secret Garden Midnight Garden Damask SKU# SH5235-MIDN-D

3. Storyboek Cream Field Stroll Main SKU# SB06-CREAM

It's Sew Emma Spotlight: Pinwheel Parade with Kimberly Jolly

Hi everyone!
We are back with another It’s Sew Emma Quilt!
Today we are introducing the Pinwheel Parade Quilt, which features the Children at Play collection by Sarah Jane for Michael Miller.
Pinwheel Parade is being offered as an exclusive quilt kit and coordinating backing set, or if you prefer, a pattern in either paper or PDF!

One of my favorite collections from quilt market was this Children at Play collection.
I just absolutely fell in love with the fabrics.
And since my favorite color is pink this was a match made in heaven.

I thought about designing a quilt with this collection for months!
And one night after I put my kids to bed I sat down and drew out this quilt in 5 minutes!
I fell instantly in love and I had this quilt sewn in two days.

This quilt is super simple to make and any little girl in your life would love this quilt! I know my Sweet Pea Emma does!

Designer Tidbits: Carina Gardner

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Carina Gardner to the Jolly Jabber. Carina’s latest fabric collection is Baby Safari from Northcott Fabrics.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Baby Safari collection?
A: My little sister was adopting her first baby. I made a digital scrapbooking kit with little elephants and giraffes and donated all the proceeds to her adoption. I fell in love with the little animals and started drawing more. I decided that it would make a sweet baby line and before I knew it I was designing Baby Safari!

Q: What are 3 words you would choose to describe this collection?
A:
1. modern
2. simple
3. cheerful

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite (can only pick one!)?
A: I like the 4527-36 (chocolate master fabric) the best. I love the contrast of colors.

Q: What is your dream project using this collection?
A: Making an entire bed set with baby quilt, bumper, and sheets! Oh and maybe some framed art. It screams "Put me in a baby's room!" My sister-in-law just had twins and the set is perfect for boy (blue set) and girl (purple set) baby/toddler rooms.

Carina's Silly Secrets:

I wish I was listening to something cool, but for the last few months I've been forced to listen to Harp CDs since my daughter Siri has taken up the harp.

2. What is your guilty pleasure food?
Homemade carmel apples and mint oreos

3. Work and life essentials aside, what is the activity you spend the most time doing?
Hanging outside. That generally means visiting with friends or neighbors & gardening. I live in this super-friendly neighborhood. We do popsicle nights in the summer, and I'm trying to get a night-time game of capture the flag going. We have a fireplace in our backyard, which means a lot of smores and sitting and shooting the breeze.

4. Where did you grow up and where do you call home?
I grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee. I had a strong southern accent. My husband says it still comes out when I talk to one of my sisters or I get mad. I now call Salt Lake City home. We moved here three years ago from MInnesota.

5. Do you have any pets and what are their name(s)?
We have one kitty named Rosy. She's a brown tabby. I spend a lot of time locking her out my studio since she likes to sit directly on the computer keyboard as I work.

6. What color are you thinking about today?
Tiffany blue. No idea why.

7. What is the most important part of a sandwich?
The MAYO (Did I mention I'm from the south?)

3 for Me: Jessica Thornburgh

Good morning and happy Friday everyone! We hope you're all geared up and ready for the weekend! And thanks for stopping by the Jolly Jabber today. We're very excited to welcome back Jessica Thornburgh:

"This is my first summer in Texas and the heat is killing me! So, with cooler weather on my mind, I stuck to cool blues and grey for my 3 current favorites. I think the little birds on the wire in this Pinfeathers print are super cute and quirky, plus I love this shade of aqua. The navy kelp print from Going Coastal reminds me of the beach where I grew up in Santa Barbara, California. And with my hometown on my mind, I couldn't resist this print from Hometown by Sweetwater. I absolutely love the way all the rotated text looks on this shade of grey!"
