Designer Tidbits: Kathy Davis

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Kathy Davis to the Jolly Jabber. Kathy’s latest fabric collection is Sweet Birdie from Free Spirit Fabrics.

Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Sweet Birdie collection?
A: I derived Sweet Birdie from a collection of paintings I did called Fantasy Garden. Fantasy Garden evolved after a period of struggle to rediscover my painting flow....I started playing with round shapes which I turned into flowers. I then added birds, bees and butterflies to the playful mix. I featured some Fantasy Garden art on my greeting cards which I design for American Greetings.

Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: I keep thinking of "Birdsong Radio" and all the cheerful sounds of birds in their natural habitat.

Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite?
A: My favorite pattern is the big floral print with the bright blue background. It just lifts my spirits!

Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A: While I can't take credit for it, the stuffed birdhouse pillow (made by Lynne Ferris & Vivian Peritts) turned out so cute!

Q: If this collection had a scent to it, what would it be?
A: It would smell like Lily of the Valley.

Q: Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A:

Q: If you had a mascot, what animal would it be?
A: My mascot would be a butterfly or a bluebird. My brand promise is to Scatter Joy, and both the butterfly and bluebird seem to do that quite well!

Q: Who is your favorite celebrity?
A: Robert Redford. Of course, he's the Brad Pitt or George Clooney of my generation, but even more than that, he is not only accomplished in his own craft of acting, he also is a highly principled person who lives what he stands for. He has founded Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival to encourage and instruct young filmmakers. He fights to protect open space in the west. He also champions the handicrafts of Native Americans and other artisans. His Sundance catalog promotes a high aesthetic, beautiful handcrafts and quality materials. I admire someone who is passionate about their work, their life and the chance to make a difference in the lives of others.

Q: If we were making a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
A: Meg Ryan. She is down to earth, relatable and attractive without being glamorous. I like her fun and vulnerable spirit.

Q: Who is your favorite fabric designer not including yourself?
A: In the fabric world, Amy Butler's work stands out. She has inspired a new generation with her fresh aesthetic.
