Block of the Month: Aunt Grace First Place

The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Vicki Bellino of Bloom Creek to the Jolly Jabber. Vicki's latest Block of the Month is Aunt Grace First Place featuring Judie Rothermel's Aunt Grace First Place fabric collection for Marcus Brothers Fabrics.

It has been my sincere pleasure to collaborate with Judie Rothermel and Marcus Fabrics on our third Aunt Grace BOM! Judie and I have become good friends over the years and I have had the opportunity to learn so much about Judie's Aunt Grace and collect all of her books. It is truly an honor to have designed this quilt using Judie’s Aunt Grace First Place fabric collection.

Each year my goal is to design an Aunt Grace BOM unique from the previous ones. This year, Judie chose a soft, romantic palette of very traditional Aunt Grace colors. Her florals and simple coordinating motifs reflect the style of quilts her own Aunt would enter into local fairs and quilt shows.

As the name of this design suggests, Aunt Grace won numerous top honors in many quilt shows and fairs, and her quilts were typically simple in design and either small or miniature quilts. Keeping this in mind, I chose traditional quilt blocks and a smaller layout, making it more indicative of an Aunt Grace quilt. This 47" x 56" quilt would be a beautiful wall hanging in any sewing room or bedroom!

Additionally, this BOM offers instruction in a variety of techniques, including basic English paper piecing, fussy cutting prints and mitering a border, as well as tips for working with setting triangles.

This 7-month BOM is designed to appeal to the true Aunt Grace devotee and requires only 9.5 yards of fabric, making it an affordable choice!
