Designer Tidbits: Sarah Jane

Sarah Jane's nautical collection, Out to Sea, has just docked. The collection arrived in the shop late last night and we are so excited to give you a first peek.  Sarah's imagination is full of whimsy and it is contagious. The three colorways take you through a journey filled with pirates, treasure maps and mermaids. Come along on a maritime adventure as we chat with Sarah Jane about her newest collection.

Q: To what or whom would you dedicate this collection, or what inspired this collection?
A: So many things! A lot of my fabric and illustration designs come from some kind of solution I want to find. Two years ago I was dreaming of pirates and mermaids, but I wanted it to have a feminine edge and feel a little sweeter than normal. Pirates of Penzance inspired me to get into the nautical theme with a balance between the girl and boy feel that is incorporated into my fabric collections. I couldn't just have pirate boys, I needed pirate girls too! After that, came the color. I've been on a navy and pink kick since last year and when I saw that navy was coming back, I jumped right into it. Navy and pink was the perfect solution to a girly nautical line. Then came my favorite boy colors: blue, grey and deep orange, and there it was! The perfect children's nautical collection for both boys and girls!

Q: What is your favorite project using this collection?
A: Well, from my Quilt Market booth, I'd have to say the covered chair in the map fabric. The map fabric is so versatile, and it's so fun for me to think of kids "sitting on top of the world!"

Q: What would be your collection’s theme song?
A: Anything from Pirates of Penzance. I'm a Musical Theater lover, and the music always makes me smile. Although, the Pirate Girls Nine song by They Might Be Giants actually inspired me to make a pirate girl's design, so that counts too.

Q: If you could live in a movie, what movie would it be?
A: Chocolat with Juliette Binoche.

Q: What do you get nostalgic over?
A: The ocean, cottages, old books, windy roads and spending time in my favorite childhood spots.

Q: What is your favorite TV show of all time?
A: I'm not a TV watcher, but Downtown Abbey has me hooked.

Q: If you could be a modern day fictional character, who would you be?
A: The Country Bunny, not in how many children she had, but in how darn clever she was at being a mom and a career woman. That rabbit has some major skills.

Q: What’s the strangest compliment you’ve ever received?
A: I was mistaken for Angela Lansbury once for a show I was in. Our microphones shared the same dial (she was in the theater next door) and the mic guy said I sounded "good and proper".
