Designer Tidbits: Pat Bravo
The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Pat Bravo to the Jolly Jabber. Pat’s latest fabric collection is Poetica from Art Gallery Fabrics.
Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Poetica collection?
A: This is one of the AGF (Art Gallery Fabrics) in-house studio collections made in collaboration with me. The inspiration behind it started with two beautiful pictures that caught our eyes. These two pictures projected peacefulness and tranquility but with an undeniable dose of modernity! I directed my team to play around with sketchy and graphic designs that create an interesting contrast but yet are harmonious in nature.
Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: Well, this is a little easy, since Poetica is completely inspired by music. Music plays such a creative role in the design process that we decided to explore it. To me, Poetica is something fun, and refreshing with deep beats that set the rhythm.
1. Rollerblades by Eliza Doolittle
2. My Moon, My Man by Feist
3. 1 2 3 4 by Feist
4. Happy Up Here by Royksopp
5. My Love by The Bird and the Bee
Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite?
A: Well, it's really difficult, since all the prints are delightful! My favorite print would have to be one of the lead prints, Serenade Daylight (POE-801)! I just love the hand drawn elements of it.
Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A: My favorite project that I've done with Poetica is one of my latest patterns, the Bo Peep Skirt. I used a print called Delicate Duet Plum, that's just bursting with this deep purple that I love so much. It really plays very well with that pattern.
Q: If this collection had a scent to it, what would it be?
A: It would definitely be a combination of a rose and lavender scent, infused with a hint of eucalyptus and mint. They are lovely florals, but with that touch of exhilaration that opens your senses!
Q: Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A: For Spring Quilt Market, I turned in the artwork I finished for my next collection. It's too soon to show it yet; the only thing I can tell you right now is that its name is Indie, and it's a sampler of artsy and crafty prints from all over the world. The colors are going to be bold and the prints will show some ethnic mood. It came out beautiful and I can't wait to show it!
For AGF in-house studio team I'm so excited to share that we're planning to re-release Modern Affair after many quilters' requests! It will have some new prints while keeping the ones that already are your favorites. The colors are going to be a surprise too! On the pattern side, I'm happy with two new patterns I designed that will debut at Quilt Market. One is going to be a skirt and the other one a simple and comfy dress that can be made from small to big sizes.
Q: If you had a mascot, what animal would it be?
A: I'm a complete dog lover! I adore them, I have them, and I just can't get enough of them. As far as a specific breed, I would have to say that I have an American Cocker Spaniel name Lucas – the mellowest dog I ever had, and a rescued dog name Daisy. She is so sweet and kind. I love them both!!
Q: Who is your favorite celebrity?
A: That's hands down easy to pick: Martha Stewart! She's a visionary that inspired so many women… As for actors, this is easy too: everybody knows I adore George Clooney. He's an excellent actor and very handsome :)
Q: If we were making a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
A: No doubts: Meryl Streep, the most versatile actress these days. I also admire Kirsten Dunst very much. I love how she acts and her expressions; the way she delivers her performances with such grace and poise, regardless of the role.
Q: Who is your favorite fabric designer not including yourself?
A: I am a big admirer of artists that do not fear of the use of color! Industry wise, I have always admired Kaffe Fassett's love of color… His boldness… The way he has no fear of putting prints together. I mean, this man is fearless and just hands down talented. I am completely amazed whenever I see his work.
Inspiration wise, it would be no other than Kenzo. His florals… His colors…. They're just majestic. Actually, there are no complete words… no complete sentences to explain how this man inspires me. To this day, his past collections still inspire me. The combinations of florals and geometrics that he pulls off are completely spellbinding!

Designer Tidbits: Amy Schimler
The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Amy Schimler to the Jolly Jabber. Amy's latest fabric collection is Fly Away from Robert Kaufman.
Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Fly Away collection?
A: The original print was the large flying birds with clouds print – It was an illustration I did in Photoshop that I printed myself at first to see how it translated to fabric. I then proposed it to Robert Kaufman and developed a group of prints around it.
Q: If your collection had a soundtrack what would be on the list?
A: Blackbird by the Beatles.
Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite?
A: Aside from the birds I would have to say the butterflies, they are so happy.
Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A: This is going to sound very lame, but I have three patterns waiting to be completed – for many months - and haven’t had time. I know I shouldn’t complain, but I have been extremely busy with illustration jobs and developing two more collections for RK. I plan on making a pillowcase with the birds, and two summery dresses with coordinating bloomers.
Q: If this collection had a scent to it, what would it be?
A: Spring Rain.
Q: Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A: It is a little too early to show you (here is a teeny sneak peek) and I am not sure which will be released next - but I just worked on a jungle group and an animal mix group, both of which I am very excited about. I will be sharing soon, I hope. The first of these will be released in Oct ‘12.
Q: If you had a mascot, what animal would it be?
A: A flamingo. This flamingo illustration is by my son when he was 4 years old, one of my favorites.
Q: Who is your favorite celebrity?
A: Audrey Hepburn – for her grace, her humility, and her generosity. I love how gracefully she aged!
Q: If we were making a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
A: Well, I hate to be redundant but it would have to be Audrey.
Q: Who is your favorite fabric designer not including yourself?
A: Fujiwo Ishimoto (Marimekko)

Winners: Pat Sloan's Girls in the Garden Patterns
In last week's post we excitedly introduced Pat Sloan's Blog Hop and her four new patterns, the Girls in the Garden Collection! We also gave 5 lucky readers the chance to win the complete pattern set! All you had to do was tell us your favorite flower. So easy, right?!
It's Sew Emma Spotlight: Windy Point Park
Is it summer yet? I’m ready for these weird cold fronts to go away and at least let some spring in. Over the weekend we took a walk around Lady Bird Lake and got to see the first signs of new life peeking out – green buds here and there, quickly being nibbled away by squirrels. Besides that, we are still in our nesting phase and my husband decided to bring home some potted orange daisies that he loves. Yep, Mr. Spring, please come quickly!
In the meantime, you can be working on this lively table runner to spruce up the cold nights! Windy Point Park sprung from the Stars and Stripes collection by My Mind’s Eye for Riley Blake Designs. Like I always say - you don’t always come across patriotic collections this cute, but when you do, you turn them into pinwheels.
The pinwheels are already fun, but add in the ribbon-tied stems and easy but interesting borders, and you’ve got a tablerunner just waiting for your July 4th picnic!
I hope this pattern brings some sunshine into your home! Shop owners, you can find this at United Notions and Checkers as ISE-117.

Designer Tidbits: Kansas Troubles Quilters
The Fat Quarter Shop is excited to welcome Lynne Hagmeier of Kansas Troubles Quilters to the Jolly Jabber. Lynne’s latest fabric collection is Sandhill Plums for Moda Fabrics.
Q: What was the first seed that grew into the Sandhill Plums collection?
A: Outside my design studio window is a row of Sandhill Plum bushes that have been there for generations. I remember as a child picking the bright red/purple berries from the prickly vines each summer and helping my Grandma make Sand Plum Jelly. Fond memories.
Q: What single print/SKU in the collection is your favorite?
A: We call this the "screen door" print because of the tiny grid in the background. I am drawn to the scattered berries and flowers that remind me so much of the Sandhill Plums.
Q: What is your favorite project you have made using this collection?
A: Just a Little Loopy was so much fun. Using Honey Bun strips as 3-dimensional accents in the quilt adds so much character and is so easy.
Q: If this collection had a scent to it, what would it be?
A: The scent of the Sand Plum blooming in spring is sweet, much like cherry blossoms, but they are a very sour berry off the vine. It takes three times the amount of sugar to make it into jelly, but it's worth it!
Q: Can you give us a sneak-peek of your next fabric collection?
A: Holiday Medley is up next, arriving in May. A scrap of vintage wrapping paper was the inspiration.
Q: Who is your favorite celebrity?
A: George Clooney. I appreciate his humanitarian efforts and politics as well as just how darn cute he is in the characters he plays.
Q: Who is your favorite designer not including yourself?
A: Pam Buda of Heartspun Quilts is my good friend and a wonderful designer. I love the way her brain spins traditional blocks into something fresh and new using a wide variety of fabrics (including KT, of course). Her Civil War era based Prairie Women Sewing Circle is very well done and close to my heart since we both love antiques and the whole idea of living connected to the land.

3 for Me: Stephanie Brieger
Happy Friday everyone! We hope you've had a great week! We personally have been enjoying some beautiful weather with highs reaching 90 degrees! Pretty hot! Speaking of hot, please join me in welcoming back Stephanie Brieger and her favorite color, black:
"Black has always been my go-to color. It usually works with everything, even brown these days (take my boots for example!). I picked the Alien Friends Dot because I want a fun spunky skirt made from it! I think the Rooftop Barn print would look stellar in a modern home as sheets with a solid comforter on top of it! I picked the Sugar Rush print because I just went to a Bridal Bash to find a bakery for my wedding. I was in cake-coma by the end, but boy was it all so delicious, just like this print!"
Steph's 3:
1. Alien Friends Charcoal Nettie Dot SKU# C8391-CHARCOAL
2. Coming Home Rooftop Black Barn Siding SKU# 19501-14
3. Sugar Rush Black Let Them Eat Cake SKU# 1069-3

It's Sew Emma Spotlight: Primitive Trails
Hi everyone! I’m glad to introduce you all to my one of my newest and loveliest patterns, Primitive Trails.
I love beautiful quilts that are easier than they seem, and this is no exception! Anyone who sees this will ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ at its elegance, but it is also great for beginning quilters. While it is a labor of love (it’s big enough for a queen or king-sized bed!), you only need a fat eight bundle, background and border fabrics. In my quilt, you see a whole sampling of the Sandhill Plums collection (Kansas Troubles Quilters fabrics never fail to amaze me) without going over the top.
It’s no secret that I love stars, just see my post on my Among the Stars pattern! And, I know a lot of you are always looking for bigger quilts. I started with this beautiful star block on paper, which came to life by contrasting golds and Sandhill Plums’ darker colors.
I love the two-tone effect you get, which is set off by the strong diamonds and sashing. A neutral border finishes the quilt without overpowering it. Traditional, elegant, simple and gorgeous!!
I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I do, and be sure to send us finished photos! Shop owners, you can find this at United Notions as ISE-122.
