Designer Tidbits: Laura Gunn

Welcome to a world of color and texture! Laura Gunn's latest collection for Michael Miller Fabrics, Edges, is full of movement and vibrant hues. Laura is here on the Jolly Jabber to chat about her latest dreamy masterpiece!

Q: Where did you find your original inspiration for Edges?
A: As a designer I just love great basics for my sewing projects. I wanted to make a line that I would want to use with everything. I thought of some of the modern art that I love and tried to channel that.

Q: What was your “aha” moment in designing this collection?
A: I sent in my first design to Kathy Miller thinking that it would be a great blender on its own--like Painter's Canvas. Kathy Miller loved it so much she wanted me to build a whole collection with it. And it just came together in a very natural way. It was such a blast to design.

Q: Tell me about your sewing machines. What kinds do you have and how many?
A: I have two Bernina sewing machines and one Bernina serger.

Q: What is your favorite part of the fabric industry?
A: The women I meet and do creative projects with.

Q: From what aspect of your life do you draw creativity?
A: I'm obsessed with color. I really notice interesting colors and textures in my surroundings--like peeling paint on an old building or bark on a tree, anything really.

Q: What is your favorite print in the collection?
A: I'm really loving the Ombre Circle and the Grid prints, available in orange, pink and lemon.

Q: What is the most challenging part of the design process?
A: Finding the time!

Q: What are your favorite and least favorite colors and why?
A: I feel a bit like you're asking me which of my children is my favorite. :) But I'll give it a shot. Aqua is a favorite color because it looks great with almost anything. As far as a least favorite goes--even the ugliest colors are great in the right context.
