Designer Tidbits: Eric & Julie Comstock

Howdy, cowboys and cowgirls! We are heading down to Texas for a Honky Tonk! Eric & Julie Comstock are here on the Jolly Jabber to give you a closer look at Honky Tonk, their latest collection for Moda Fabrics. Saddle up for some Southern inspiration!

Q: Tell us a little about the Honky Tonk collection. What were you inspired by?
A: Last summer we moved to Austin, Texas and were inspired to create Honky Tonk. The Turquoise Door on South Congress inspired the teal blue color. Motifs from country shirts, cowboy boots and Austin's music scene all make a debut.

Q: What is your design process when beginning a new collection?
A: For this line, we started with by picking the colors. Then Eric created some hand drawn icons. He emailed those over and I created the fabric designs. I emailed those back over to Eric and he finished up the production work.

Q: What design trends are you currently exploring?
A: Triangles! We love them and love playing with them and other geometric shapes. That's been a lot of fun. We always love typography and have been excited to see all the interest in lettering of all kinds.

Q: What projects do you hope to see made using Honky Tonk?
A: I think star motif blocks in this fabric would make a gorgeous quilt. Even though the colors might not be traditional, I think traditional blocks will be beautiful. I am not a great quilter, and tend to make more home-decor or wearable things. I love this line for bags, skirts and anything cozy! It has such a warm, home-y feel to me. I might talk my sister into making me a Country Christmas quilt for the back of my sofa.

Q: What projects have you made using Honky Tonk?
A: I made a reversible bag first thing. I have a friend that told me the floral was her favorite design I've ever created, so I've just been waiting to get the fabric to make this for her. I'm working on a baby quilt for another friend. I saw a quilt, at Whole Foods in Austin, of all places, that inspired this. I am just using random scraps, sewn together in random ways. It's fun.

Q: How do you describe your style?
A: My style tends to be bold. I am not the girl that creates a lot of dainty things. I like strong graphic designs, bold type and rich colors. I love shapes and how they fit together and sometimes get lost in the challenge of making things "fit". Eric is much more relaxed with his work than I am. He adds a lot of the whimsical elements to our lines. His style is still bold, but in a loose way. I'm a bit jealous of it actually!

I really love their fabric collections. I have gathered up fabric from Odds & Ends and will be making a quilt for myself with it.

I love this fabric! The reversible bag, too! Is there a pattern for that?
