Pockets and Pies Apron - Free Pattern and Tutorial

We have a fun project to share today! A few months ago, some Duck Dynasty fabric arrived at Fat Quarter Shop, and we KNEW we wanted to make something fun. Kimberly is a big Ducky Dynasty fan and she instantly started brainstorming. We designed a fast and easy apron pattern and sewed it up in the Duck Dynasty Pink Camo Duck fabric. We liked this project so much, we decided to publish a FREE pattern and tutorial video! Introducing the Pockets and Pies Apron!

To see aprons made by some of our favorite peeps around the web, and even some Fat Quarter Shop-ers, hop over to the bottom of this post!

Before you begin, you will need 1 yard of fabric (we chose Duck Dynasty Pink Camo Duck fabric, but the options are pretty much endless!), one standard dish towel (16" x 26") and matching thread. We used a 3.0 stitch length throughout the project, and backstitched at the beginning and end of each seam, unless otherwise noted. We filmed a tutorial video that walks you through the entire assembly process for this easy apron, if you want to see it made in action!

To begin, cut your one yard into 2 - 4" x width of fabric strips to form the apron tie and 1 - 20" x 22" rectangle for the apron front.

Measure 9 1/2" from the bottom of the towel and mark each side with a pin.

With wrong sides together, fold the fabric rectangle in half. Folded fabric should measure 11" x 20".

Place the folded Fabric on the right side of the towel, aligning the folded edge along the 9 ½" pin line. Pin in place.

Turn over the towel and trim the fabric 1" from the outside of the towel.

Fold each raw edge of the Folded Fabric under ½" twice toward the back side of the towel and clip in place with pins or Clover Wonder Clips.

With a ¼" seam allowance, sew along three sides.

Mark two lines on the Folded Fabric piece, to form three pockets. Pockets should measure approximately 5 ¼" wide.

Sew on the drawn lines.

Join the two 4" x width of fabric strips end to end on the diagonal and press open. Trim the ends of the strip so the edges are straight.

On the wrong side of the fabric strip, draw a line lengthwise through the center. Fold long edges to drawn line and press.

Fold under ½" along the short edge of the fabric strip and press.

Fold entire strip in half lengthwise and press.

With a ¼" seam allowance, sew the folded strip closed along the three open sides.

Working 16" from the bottom of the towel, fold the top of the towel to the back.

Center the apron tie along the folded edge of the towel and pin in place.

With an ¹⁄ ₈" seam allowance, sew the apron tie to the towel in a rectangular pattern on all four sides.

And there you have it! Your apron is complete! We love this quick and easy sewing project, and even decided to whip up another apron in the Duck Dynasty Brown Camo Duck fabric.

But do not fret! This apron looks adorable in a wide variety of fabrics. Two Fat Quarter Shop-ers made their own versions of the Pockets and Pies Apron. The nautical apron features fabric from The Littles by Michael Miller Fabrics, and the retro apron features vintage fabric.
