Nested Churn Dash Quilt Along with Quilt Jane

I am really excited that Quilt Jane asked us to participate in her Nested Churn Dash Block Quilt Along!

The Churn Dash block is so classic, and I have definitely dabbled in the Churn Dash block before. I love Quilt Jane’s variation! Nesting the block like this multiplies the cuteness. Her original block turned out happy and bright in April Showers, so I kept the cheery palette going and chose 30's Playtime from Moda Fabrics for my block.

I did my coloring scheme a bit differently. I used red and green prints to color the half-square triangle corners and alternated the placement of blue and pink prints for my strips. Altogether, it has a scrappy effect, but not overly so. (I call myself a “planned-scrappy” quilter; that’s a thing, right?) It’s all tied together with a Ruby Ice solid background. Since there’s a bit of white in the prints I used, the light blue gives it a shaded but still light and neutral place to rest.

You probably can’t see any of my stitches, but I used Aurifil color 2000 to piece my Nested Churn Dash Block. It’s my standard sewing color, a light cream that blends like a really blend-y dream. I use this color for 90% of my sewing.

I confess I ran out of time to quilt it into a project, but I found a huge 24” frame to display it! I’m thinking of painting the frame white or gray, and it will look gorgeous on a picture shelf. I’m also thinking about making one with a yellow background and light, low volume prints for the churn dash. What do you think?
