It’s Debbie here on the Jolly Jabber to talk a little bit about
the new Bertie’s Winter Block of the Month. Bertie's Winter has the look of soft wool, and it's applique-heavy, but not difficult. Since I adore Bertie so much, I've decided to create a tutorial for you for the first block, shown above! Let's get started!
Start by tracing all the images onto fusible webbing (I use Heat n Bond Lite). These patterns are already reversed for you, so there's no guesswork!
Number the “stripes” on the candy cane so that placing them on
top of the white candy cane is easier.
Cut out each piece 1/8" outside your traced lines. You still need to be able to see your drawn lines! Then iron these pieces
onto the back of the flannel, following the manufacturer's instructions on your
brand of fusible web. Now it’s time to find your sharpest scissors and cut your shapes directly on the line.
Following the “layout” pattern, position each piece on your
background fabric. Remember that you will be trimming this background
piece 1/4" all the way around once all the pieces are fused and top-stitched, so
watch your placement.
Now the top-stitching! The Precentia thread pack
is perfectly matched to the flannels, however you can use other threads too! For this project, I hand stitched the applique using the wool applique needle by Fons & Porter that has a larger eye to accommodate the thicker thread and a sharp
point to pierce the flannel.
Always bring your needle up in the
background fabric and down to the fused shape. Place your stitches
about 1/8” apart.
The thread and bead pack used to embellish the project are the perfect final touch to each piece. It also takes out all the guesswork and running around to try and find just the right color of thread or button.
And we are all finished! It's amazing what one little bird can do with Maywood's Woolies flannel, thread and a button or two.
