Sew Illustrated: Gift Tag Tutorial

It's time for round three of our Sew Illustrated series featuring Heidi from Fabric Mutt! With the holidays creeping around the corner, we thought it would be the perfect time to bring you a personalized, easy-to-make, (last minute) gift! Today, Heidi will be showing you how to make these adorable holiday gift tags!
These little bits of colorful patchwork are the quickest way to add handmade joy to any occasion. You can use leftover scraps, feature tiny prints, and even work in some of your favorite trims or embroidery to add a personal touch.

If you’re feeling especially festive, string a batch of these tags together on a line of baker’s twine or ribbon to make a sweet garland for your tree, mantle, or even table decoration!

Festive Gift Tag Tutorial
Finished Size: 2 1/4" x 3 1/2" (not including loop)
Directions
1. Sew pieces A & B together along a 2 3/4" side as shown in the photo above. Use adhesive basting spray to fuse the wrong side of the tag front panel to batting piece D. Quilt or embroider as desired.

2. Fold twill tape piece E in half, WST, with short ends meeting. Stitch the ends together 1/8" from the edge.  Center the stitched ends on the top edge of the tag front panel and baste in place.

3. Place piece D on top of the tag front panel, RST, and stitch all the way around the rectangle, leaving a 2" opening on one of the long sides.  Be sure to backstitch when you start and stop. Trim down the excess seams at the corners.

4. Carefully turn the tag right side out, gently pushing out the corners with a turning tool. Tuck the raw edges inside the opening, press the tag, and then topstitch all the way around the rectangle 1/8" from the edge.  Thread ribbon or string through the loop and attach the tag to a gift for someone special!

We have so many people on our nice list this year and we couldn't wait to make custom gift tags for each one of them!
We even used some for decoration on our tree and our sewing-inspired Christmas wreath!

We used some of our favorite buttons for sweet embellishment! We also thought it would be fun to use some of these festive ribbons from KimberBell Designs!

We can't wait to see your gift tags for all of your friends and family! Be sure to tag us on Instagram @fatquartershop and @fabricmutt and use the hashtag #festivegifttag. Happy wrapping!
