Designer Tidbits: Geometric Bliss by Jeni Baker

Welcome back to another edition of Designer Tidbits on the Jolly Jabber! We have Jeni Baker of In Color Order today to talk about her newest collection for Art Gallery Fabrics, Geometric Bliss. This is Jeni's fourth collection, and it's better than ever! Read on to find out more about the collection.

Q: Tell us a little about the Geometric Bliss collection. What were you inspired by?
A: Geometric Bliss is my fourth collection with Art Gallery Fabrics, and like my previous collections, it was inspired by Scandinavian designs. This time around I was especially inspired by folk art florals and bold graphic prints from the 70s. I also found inspiration in the current offerings from Marimekko, one of my favorite design companies. Geometric Bliss is bold and edgy while at the same time maintaining a bit of sweetness in the color scheme and details.

Q: What is your design process when beginning a new collection?
A: My design process usually starts with research. I spend a lot of time collecting inspiration and just soaking it in. I do a lot of thinking before I actually start drawing anything! When I do start designing the collection, it is all done digitally. I draw directly into the computer with a digital tablet and pen. Geometric designs are built from manipulated shapes and lines. The collection gets colored and the prints are edited to find a good balance in scale, type and color.

Q: What is your favorite print from Geometric Bliss?
A: That’s tough! I think my favorite print from Geometric Bliss is Poppie Coordinates in Petal. I love the colors together and I think the print is going to work really well for all kinds of projects. Polygons in Callalily is a close second, I am loving black and white lately!

Q: What is the best part about being a designer?
A: I think the best part about being a designer is being able to imagine a print, imagine its use, and then realize it. It is really cool to be able to design a project from start to finish, from the fabric design to the pattern, and then actually make the project. It is kind of wild! Plus, the day a new collection arrives at your doorstep is pretty special!

Q: What projects do you hope to see made with GeometricBliss?
A: I cannot wait to see what kinds of quilts will be made with Geometric Bliss. This is probably my most versatile collection so far, and I think it will be great for all kinds of different projects. I hope there will be plenty of clothes made from it as well! Personally, I want to make myself a new duffel bag from it!
