Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts is back on the Jolly Jabber to explain her process for mixing and matching cotton and batik fabrics. If you're not familiar with batiks, they are fabrics that are hand-dyed through traditional processes using wax and stamps. Just a glance at any of Edyta's quilts will reveal how she loves to mix and match fabrics when she designs, and the results are riveting. This concept has been around since the 1800s, when women would make crazy quilts by mixing all kinds of textiles such as silks, cottons and even drapery in their quilts.
Have you ever tried mixing batiks and prints together? Let us know in the comments below if you love mixing and matching!
Very thought provoking video... thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI usually tend to use these fabrics separately, but would like to mix them up more!
It is nice to see this as I do like to mix them together though I have had some quilters comment that the should not be mix.
ReplyDeleteEdyta has such a beautiful way of using different fabrics and making it even more beautiful than before. I love her books and fabric line, and thread collection. It's all wonderful.(celiaambrose@hotmail.com)
ReplyDeleteNo I haven't mixed them, but I've not had batiks until about a month ago. Love Edyta-she makes me feel like I can create anything.
ReplyDeleteLoved the video on combining batiks with prints, etc. It's such a freeing move. Too many quilters think all batiks should be used in a quilted piece!
